Nakamura wins Donostia GM tournament!

The Donostia Chess Festival took place from July 7th to July 16th, 2009 in Donostia, San-Sebastian. The main event was a Category 18 tournament featuring the following 10 players: Peter Svidler (RUS), Ruslan Ponomariov (UKR), Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Sergei Movsesian (SVK), Francisco Vallejo-Pons (ESP), Rustam Kasimdzhanov (UZB), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA), Anatoly Karpov (RUS), Julio Granda Zuniga (PER), Pablo San Segundo Carrillo (ESP).

Ponomariov and Nakamura both finished on 6.5/9, so tie-breaks were played to determine the winner of the tournament. Nakamura is the final winner of the tournament after beating Ponomariov 2-0 in tie-breaks.

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting took place from July 2nd to July 12th 2009.

37th Greek Premier League

The 37th Greek Premier League Championship took place at Athos Palace (G-Hotels Complex) in Kallithea, Halkidiki, between the 3rd and 9th of July 2009. Thirty one teams competed. Vassily Ivanchuk (UKR 2746), Sergei Tiviakov (NED 2697), Viktor Bologan (MDA 2690), David Navara (CZE 2654), Evgeny Postny (ISR 2648), David Howell (ENG 2613), Ivan Ivanisevic (SRB 2625), and many more grandmasters participated.

The team of Kavala Chess Club (SO Kavalas) won the title for a second year in a row. GM's Evgeny Tomashevsky (RUS), Papaioannou, Halkias, Skembris, and WGM Anna Maria Botsari played in SO Kavala's top boards. PS Peristeriou, the team of Vassily Ivanchuk (UKR) and Bartlomiej Macieja (POL) in the top two boards, took second place, while the team os ES Thessalonikis (GM's Evgeny Miroshnichenko, Radoslav Wojtaszek, Mastrovasilis D. & Mastrovasilis A. in the top boards) finished third.
