Prior to the Grand Slam Final Masters, which will take place in Bilbao, Spain, in coming October, is the Shanghai Masters tournament (3 - 8 September 2010).
Wang Hao (best Chinese player, 20th place in world ranking), Alexei Shirov (best Spanish player, 9th place), Levon Aronian (winner of the Bilbao Final Masters 2009, 5th place), and Vladimir Kramnik (4th place in the world) will compete for two places in the Bilbao Masters 2010.

Magnus Carlsen, current number one of the world and winner of Corus, Nanjing - China and Bazna - Romania tournaments (the third replaced M-Tel Masters which was cancelled due to the organizing of the World Championship Match in Sofia), and Viswanathan Anand, current World Champion (3rd place in world ranking), will face the top two players of Shangai Masters.

Carlsen wins Arctic Stars

The Arctic Securities Chess Stars tournament took place in Kristiansund, Norway, between the 28th and 30th of August 2010. Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Judit Polgar and Jon Ludvig Hammer competed. 

Preliminary stage (Double round robin, time control 20' + 10'' a move)
1. Anand, Viswanathan g IND 2800 5.0
2. Carlsen, Magnus g NOR 2826 3½
3. Hammer, Jon Ludvig g NOR 2636 2.0
4. Polgar, Judit g HUN 2682 1½

Carlsen won the final match against Anand 1.5-0.5, while Hammer beat Polgar in the match for bronze.

The 7th China vs Russia Match (men's and women's teams) took place between the 4th and 16th of August 2010. The match consisted of 5 standard games and 20 rapid ones and ended in favour of hostess team China.

The World Juniors Championships (Boys & Girls under 20) took place in Chotowa, Poland from August 2nd to August 17th 2010. Favourites and top-seeded Dmitry Andreikin and Anna Muzychuk won the champion's title.

The 1st International Tournament "Negroponte 2010" took place at the hotel "Paliria" in Halkida, Greece, from August 9th to August 17th, and it was organized by the Chess Academy of Halkida “Palamedes of Evia”.

The NH Chess Tournament, organized by NH Hotels in close cooperation with Max Euwe Association, Monaco, is a ‘Scheveningen’ team tournament between an ‘Experience’ team and a ‘Rising Stars’ team.

The ‘Experience’ team consisted of Boris Gelfand (Israel), Peter Svidler (Russia), Peter Heine Nielsen (Denmark), Loek van Wely (Netherlands) and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia).

The ‘Rising Stars’ were Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Fabiano Caruana (Italy), Wesley So (Philippines), Anish Giri (Netherlands) and David Howell (England).

The Rising Stars beat the team of Experience 26.0-24.0, while Gelfand, Giri and Nakamura scored the highest. Nakamura beat Giri in tie-breaks, so he won the ticket for the next Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament.
